Following his marriage in 1898 to Linda Craige, Robert Henri and his bride spent two years on an extended honeymoon in France. Boulevard Montparnasse - The Cloud dates from this sojourn, Henri's fourth trip abroad. While his paintings from earlier visits were smaller in scale, during this period he executed several canvases identical in size to the present painting. Indeed, one of these, La Neige, a Parisian street scene, was acquired by the French government for the Musee du Luxembourg.
The deep one-point perspective seen in Boulevard Montparnasse - The Cloud is similar to that employed in Henri's other work of the period, as is the subject matter - a bustling tree-lined Parisian boulevard. The muted palette is relieved by a white cloud looming in a blue sky as well as by scattered touches of red, effectively drawing the viewer's eye into the composition.
