For more than twenty years, John Sloan focused on studies of the female nude, creating a series of unusual and intriguing images. In John Sloan's Women, A Psychoanalysis of Women, Janice M. Coco suggests that these works reveal the painter's intimate connection to his models - despite his attempts to maintain an objective distance from them. Blonde on Blue is a classic example of his painted nudes of the late 1920s, the foreshortened reclining figure rendered with broad, expressive brushstrokes in tones of pink and yellow. As are other figures in this series, she is nearly enveloped by lavish draperies in a symphony of pastel hues.
