Arriving in New York in 1938, Kline worked in a succession of odd jobs to make it possible for him to continue painting, and to support his bride. Elizabeth Vincent Parsons Kline once observed that her husband was "a painter of his own life;" [Elizabeth Kline, Letter to the Editor, Art News, 61 (January 1963): 6] his home and studio inspired many of his early compositions. The present work most likely represents Elizabeth, a frequent model for her husband, at a moment when her world was falling apart as she struggled with mental illness. In February 1948, she entered Central Islip State Hospital, where she remained as a patient for twelve years. The black and white cat at right, named Kitska, had been a family pet for several years.
