American, Late 19th Century
Seascape, Long Island, 1883
Signed W. Huston and dated 1883 (ll)
Oil on canvas
12 x 20 inches
Provenance:
Estate of Ronald G. Pisano
William Huston traveled to Eastern Long Island around 1874/75 and lived in Patchogue, in Suffolk County, in the 1880s. He exhibited Long Island coastal scenes at the National Academy of Design in 1882, 1885, and 1886.
Although the exact location of this seascape has not been identified, it bears some resemblance to Huston's painting Plumb Gut, Long Island Sound from 1874, depicting a view of boats sailing on choppy waters off the North Fork.
