Margaret Giorgiana (1787-1814), second daughter of the Honourable Stephen Poyntz, married John Spencer, Viscount Althorp and Earl Spencer. They became the parents of the famous beauty Giorgiana Spencer, later Duchess of Devonshire. This work relates to an unfinished varient of the portrait listed in Waterhouse's inventory as no. 629.
