Surface dirt, with particular concentration of dirt on canvas along stretcher bars. Right panel has many scuffs throughout lower half of painting and four in upper half. A 1/4'' tear in canvas at right edge, center. The tear continues around edge. Left panel has seven scuffs in lower quarter of canvas.
