Thomas Fletcher & Sidney Gardiner (active 1808-1842), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1815
The eagle head pommel with silver wire wrapped black wood grip and a strap knuckle guard. Length overall 31 inches.
Literature:
Donald L. Fennimore, Silversmiths to the Nation: Thomas Fletcher & Sidney Gardiner: 1808-1842, Antique Collectors' Club, Ltd., New York: 2007, p. 196 (figure 59), and included in the exhibition.
While the firm of Fletcher & Gardiner are renown for their presentation silver as seen in the recent exhibition, the sword offered here may be the only known sword of its type to be marked by this maker. Additionally, Philadelphia Eagle Pommel swords of this pattern are rarely hallmarked.
