The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Dr. Manfred Reuther of the Nolde Stiftung, Seebull and is accompanied by a photo-certificate of authenticity.
Rejected for admission by the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in 1898, Emil Nolde took private classes in painting for three years and made a point of visiting galleries is Munich and Paris to familiarize himself with currents in contemporary art. The very personal style that he developed in this period was characterized by vigorous brushwork and brilliant color, which clearly allied his work with German Expressionism. In 1906 and 1907 he was a member of the revolutionary Expressionist group Die Brücke; then, in the years from 1908 through 1910 he joined the Berlin Secession. Finally, he exhibited with Kandinsky's Der Blaue Reiter group in 1912, after which he gave up all such associations.
Nolde was a gifted watercolorist, noted both for vivid floral still lifes and for brooding, stormy landscapes, such as this work.
