This drawing is a sketch for the figure of the amateur who appears in three paintings by Daumier of the same title. One of the paintings is in the collection of the Musee du Petit Palais, Paris.

Adhered along the verso edges to board. Matburn. Lightly toned. Few scattered spots of foxing. Horizontal center crease. Several tears and losses along the edges (one large repaired to at right center edge - 1 3/8 x 1/2"; tear with loss at lower right edge - 1 x 1/2"; small loss at upper left center edge; 5/8 x 1/2" loss at lower left center edge and a repaired 1 x 1" tear with 5/8 x 1/4" loss at lower left corner edge. Spots of glue and paper residue along the edges.
