in a hinged leather case with clasps, with two bust length portraits of a woman. Image 3 3/4 x 2 1/2 inches (95 x 75 mm). The leather case signed "Cutting's Patent July 4th & 11th 1854," the gold frame surrounding the image stamped "Briggs & Knapp" and again "Cuttings Pat." Some wear to case.
Briggs & Knapp were in partnership as photographers in Boston between 1856 and 1860. Cutting, another known Boston daguerrian, applied for patents in Washington, one of which for an ambrotype printing method which was bought by Briggs & Knapp.
