Lot Details

Lot 106
[MANUSCRIPT] Two large cuttings in the manner of an Italian antiphonary, both with very large historiated initials.
. Written on vellum, the staves in red and notes and chant (in Italian) in black. Both cuttings roughly 12 x 8 inches (30 x 21 cm); both with large pictorial versals, one heightened with laid gold, the other with shell gold. A few minor losses to the laid gold, overall both in attractive condition.
An interesting pair of cuttings with fine illuminated initials. The first, the initial "P," depicts a tonsured priest pointing at a line of text within a book (presumably the Bible), apparently in heated disputation with a second figure (looking singularly ill-disposed); the scene surrounded by a dragon biting its tail, the balance of the letter constructed of acanthus, topped with an angelic figure. The second, the initial "O," has a portrait of a tonsured monastic in gray robes playing a portative organ, surrounded by acanthus against a field of shell gold. These are likely 19th century pastiches.
