First edition, inscribed to B.A. Slaff and with a small drawing of a boy and dog (resembling the boy from this book) with an axe chopping his way into a 'Forbidden Garden' in which waits a nude woman. First printing with the misprinted final recto sheet, the price on the jacket at $1.75 and the code "30-60 No. 9694". Decorated boards with cloth, in original dust jacket. Some thumbsoiling, light shelfwear, jacket darkened with small losses to spine.
A fine and intriguing drawing within a scarce early Sendak work.
