SEUSS, DR. [=GEISEL, THEODOR SEUSS] The Cat in the Hat.
. New York: Random House, (1957). First edition (with unglazed boards), in the first jacket, with the 200/200 price, and lacking the printing statement below the biography on the rear flap. Original pictorial boards in jacket, as noted. 9 x 6 1/2 inches (23 x 16.5 cm); [2], 61, [1] pp., illustrated throughout. Corners rubbed, exposing board, minor edge wear, minor wear to head and toe of spine, the jacket with some rubbing to extremities, and a 1/4 inch loss at the foot of the front panel, but surprisingly sound and complete for a work so well loved by its juvenile readers, a very respectable copy indeed; Together with The Cat in the Hat Song Book. New York: Random House, [1967]. Probable first edition (the rear cover mentions only titles prior to this). Original pictorial cloth. 11 x 8 inches (28 x 20 cm); unpaginated, illustrated throughout. Light wear.
The Cat in the Hat is probably the most recognizable of all Seuss creations, a bringer of mischievous mayhem, all miraculously resolved (as the Cat always puts away his playthings), thus leaving the children with the difficult dilemma of what to tell their mother as she walks in:
"What would YOU do
If your mother asked YOU?"
