Fine Black Phyllite Stele of Buddha with Attendant Bodhisattvas
Eastern India, Pala Dynasty, 10th/11th century
The erect central figure of Buddha is supported by a double lotus, the bodhisattva by singles and all three are dressed in clinging robes. Above the Buddha's head is a parasol of rank and over each shoulder is a diminutive buddha and running along the edge of the stele is a thick twisted-rope band. 24 x 13 inches (60 x 31 cm).
