A collection of three major works on the Amistad trial, a key Supreme Court decision that restored freedom to the slaves on the Amistad, and which was hailed by the Abolitionist movement as a major victory. As noted by Samuel Eliot Morison, it was the most important case to involve slavery prior to the Dred Scott case, which led, of course, to a far less happy outcome. Both Baldwin and Adams argued the case of Joseph Cinque and his fellow slaves, with considerable eloquence.
