. Richmond: Thomas Nicholson, 1795. First edition, this copy bears the signature "Ja. Iredell" to the front pastedown, likely the early Supreme Court Justice James Iredell, although given the scarcity of autograph material for comparison, this is unconfirmed. Contemporary calf with a tooled border to covers, housed in a cloth case. 12 1/4 x 7 inches (31 x 18.5 cm); 165, [3] pp., with ink annotations on p. 157 only. The rear board with old waterstaining, the binding rubbed and worn with some text and end leaves detaching, stamp to verso of title, some spotting and chips to edges.
This work is attributed to Declaration of Independence signer George Wythe, who is noted as the first American law professor and an important Virginia judge. It is likely that James Iredell, appointed to the Supreme Court in 1790, would own such a volume. There are underlinings and brief annotations to one case, a Virginia Supreme Court case regarding the price of tobacco. Evans 29930.
