Johnston's signed copy. 20th century cloth. 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches (25 x 17 cm); caption titled, 67, [1] pp., large folding map printed in colors. In 1905 the Five Civilized Tribes held a Constitutional Convention in Muskogee to draft the current constitution in hopes of creating a new state in order to remain in control of their lands and avoid becoming part of the state of Oklahoma (which entered into the Union in 1906). The proposal was rejected by President Roosevelt. The map present here proposed the new county lines for that state. This copy is signed by Henry S. Johnston, delegate to the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention and the seventh governor of the state. Hargrett 221 (first issue); Streeter Sale 605; Howes S-295.
