. [Philadelphia:] 22 July 1797. Engraved document on vellum with two large vignettes accomplished in manuscript appointing John Wallington Lieutenant in the Fourth Regiment of Infantry, signed by Adams as president and countersigned by James McHenry as Secretary of War, with an embossed seal, the document engraved by Thackara & Valance, Philadelphia. 18 x 15.5 inches (47 x 40 cm); framed. Folds with one puncture, staining along one fold, some spotting and thumbsoiling.
With the cessation of Indian warfare, the Legion of the United States (as the American military was known between 1792 and 1796) was reorganized by an Act of Congress and thus these large, finely engraved vellum documents were produced. The Fourth Infantry would serve in Georgia and Tennesee during this time period.
