Lot 253
ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY Oration on the Life and Character of Gilbert Motier de Lafayette. Delivered at the Request of Both Houses of...
. Washington, D.C.: Gales and Seaton, 1835. First edition. Printed on heavy paper. Contemporary purple straight grained morocco gilt, the covers ruled in gilt, the spine tooled and lettered in gilt, pale green endpapers and flyleaves, the edges stained yellow and speckled red. 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches (22 x 14 cm); 94 pp. including appendix. A very fine and fresh copy with very few internal spots and minor rubbing to binding extremities, a few nicks or short scratches to covers, slight abrasion to front flyleaf.
This copy resembles the known presentation copies of this title in that it is printed on thick paper and is in a fine straight grained morocco binding of the period with similar tooling and lettering although this copy in a purple rather than red morocco. While the presentation copies contain an inserted leaf inscribed by Adams, this volume shows no evidence of it having been removed. In this oration, Adams recalls the life and service of Lafayette in the American and French Revolutions.
