. London: printed for G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1787. First English edition, first issue (with the title page point, the "O" of "Odyssey" over the "o" of "mores"). Two volumes, mottled calf of the period, neatly rebacked to style, all edges yellow. 8 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches (21.5 x 12.5 cm); xv. [1], 462 pp.; xii, 432 pp., with five folding copper-engraved plates, including two maps. Expertly rebacked to style as noted (with plain calf stained to resemble mottle). The plates (which are bound in the rear of each volume) have some foxing.
Chastellux was a commander under Rochambeau in Washington's army, and after the war travelled to explore the new nation he had helped found. This is the first great account of the United States. Howes C 324; Sabin 12229; ESTC N62308.
