[CHILDRENS BOOKS] Group of twelve early 19th century childrens books.
. Philadelphia (with one exception): various publishers, 1808-1828. Original printed or colored paper wrappers, in 20th century marbled cloth pull-off case with two compartments. Most 4 to 6 inches in height; various paginations. A few minor defects or restorations, but most overall fine (especially for this class of books), probably from the collection of Moses Polock, the uncle of Dr. Rosenbach; these reputedly came from Dr. R.
Sold with an inscribed copy of Rosenbach's Early American Children's Books, 1933, the collection includes The Uncle's Present, a New Battledore, [1810], with its wonderful engravings of street cries [Welch 1363; Rosenbach 428; AI 21546]; The American Primer, or an Easy Introduction to Spelling and Reading, 1813, printed by Mathew Carey [Rosenbach 468]; Think Before You Speak, 1810 [Welch 297.1; Rosenbach 438]; The Search after Happiness, 1811 [Rosenbach 442]; The Council of Dogs. Illustrated with Suitable Engravings, 1809, first American edition, with eight engravings [Rosenbach 389]; New-York Preceptor, or, Third Book, this New York and Baltimore, [1823], [Rosenbach 465]; Village Annals, 1814, [Rosenbach 514]; The Blackbird's Nest, 1812 [The Blackbird's Nest]; McCarty's American Primer... [1828], [Rosenbach 714]; Die Gefahr in Den Strassen, 1810 [i.e. One Hundred Dangers of the Streets], [Welch 431]; The Daisy; or, Cautionary Stories in Verse, 1808, misimposed as usual but apparently complete [Rosenbach 382; Welch 1355.2]; and A Picture Book for Little Children, [1812], [Rosenbach 466].
