... Boston: W. Spotswood & J. Nancrede, 1796. First American edition. American half-calf of the period, marbled boards. 4 x 2 1/2 inches (10.5 x 6.5 cm); 264 pp., with three engraved plates by S. Hill, one as frontispiece. Minor restorations to binding, endpapers renewed, one folding plate lacking its fold-out, the other plates with early hand-coloring, browning and toning throughout, early name on title.
First American edition, intended for children, of this French classic first separately issued in 1789. It appears to be quite rare, with seven copies on OCLC, most in major holdings. Welch American Children's Books 1143.1; Evans 31150.
