. Boston: 30 August 1782. Partially printed document with ink signatures of John Hancock as governor and the countersignatures of John Avery as Secretary and Henry Gardner as Treasurer, this being the bottom portion of a larger pay order, the verso with manuscript notation reading "Adam Collson £ 5.8/Ent. Journal Page 1206/Examnd. JH", these notations possibly in Hancock's hand. Nicely framed with a portrait. Remnants of an affixed paper slip to verso, lightly toned along edges, a dark signature.
Despite lacking the upper portion of the document, this signed slip contains a stirring association. A Boston Sons of Liberty member, patriot Adam Collson (Colson) is known to have guarded the HMS Dartmouth in Boston Harbor in November 1773 and he is recorded as having shouted from the balcony of the Old South Meeting House on the night of the Boston Tea Party "Boston Harbor, a teapot tonight!" A leather dresser by trade, Collson was appointed to several posts during the Revolution and is listed in August 1782 as a Selectman who entered a petition to be paid as a retailer.
