... Danzig: David-Fridericus Rhetius for the author, [1674]-1678. First edition. Contemporary vellum gilt over pasteboards, laced spine, yapped fore-edge with traces of silk ties, flat spine ruled in compartments hand lettered in the first, all edges gilt. 15 x 9 3/4 inches (38 x 25 cm); engraved title depicting God's blessing descending on a flowering plant surrounded by savants, printed title-leaf with the engraved vignette signed by Breyn with a neat note extending the publishing license to Holland (where this copy was almost certainly bound), and West Friesland ["nec non illustris: Holland: atque West: Fris: ordinum"], 17 ff., 195 pp., 9 pp.. index, [2], xxv pp. appendix, 1 p. errata with a note apparently in Breyn's hand; 9 engravings in text and 101 very fine engraved plates, one folding Binding with minor soiling but in sound, attractive condition, with some offsetting and scattered pale foxing, some plates with a neat note of the Linnaean taxonomy of the plant. Quaritch note on the rear pastedown.
A very fine work on exotic plants from Japan, the Americas, East Indies and South Africa. Hunts states "a sumptuously produced book with beautiful engraved plates," which is no overstatement; the engravings by Isaac Saal are of real excellence.
