Lot 453
. Paris : Dondey-Dupré père et fils, 1828. First edition of the first French edition of Faust. 19th century half leather with paste-paper sides. 5 3/8 x 3 1/2 inches (13.5 x 9 cm); xii. frontispiece plate bound after the half-title/errata leaf, 312 pp. Covers rubbed, some minor soiling and toning to text, lower blank corner of one leaf lacking, in all a sound copy of a rare work. This copy does not have the advertisement leaves found in some copies.
Nerval's translation of Faust received praise from Goethe himself, and inspired Berlioz' La Damnation de Faust. Nerval was just twenty at the time, and the book established his reputation. Albert Stapfer issued a translation of Part 1 of Faust the same year, but Nerval's work precedes it, and is of far superior literary quality. Carteret II, 216; Henning II, 1, no. 1086.
