Collection of thirty-three autograph letters signed, together seventy-five pages, 4to and 8vo, Sharpsburg, MD, Fredericksburg, VA, Stonemans Station, VA, 24 September 1862-26 December 1864, to "Dear Father," "Dear Parents," and "Dear James." One incomplete, several written in pencil, faded, one torn, one damaged with loss of a few words. (33)

Gould enlisted in the New York State Volunteers at Albany in September 1862. From camp near Sharpsburg on 4 October of that year he writes "as I am writing this I can hear the canons roar and the shells go whis through the air. They are about 1/2 mile down the river. We can see the Gray backs on the side of the river..." Gould was at Fredericksburg and describes the removal of the wounded. He was both an orderly and cook in the hospital. He describes various skirmishes around Hagerstown, MD. "I have seen some of the worst sights that I ever did in my life it was a big barn full of rebel wounded and the devils in human shape set it on fire when we advanced."
