Lot Details

Lot 19
Clay, Henry
Autograph letter signed ("H. Clay"), one page with integral blank, 4to, Yellow Springs, 25 July 1830, to John Woods of Hamilton, Ohio. Clay discusses his schedule while on a trip to Ohio and reveals his desire not to face the press: "I retain the wish expressed to you that there should be as little parade connected with my visit as possible. One of the greatest causes of my repugnance to public speaking is that publications in regard to it may follow. And as it is impossible for me to prepare or correct any thing for the press, perversions or misrepresentations may be made." Old repairs on verso, partially visible with restoration of loss along left margin, not affecting text. Framed with engraved portrait.

Estimate: $300 - $500
Sold for $250 (includes buyer's premium)
