Letter signed, one page with integral address leaf, 4to, Nashville, 20 November 1816, to [Philemon] Thomas (major general of the second division of the Louisiana militia) at Baton Rouge, recommending General Eleazer Wheelock Ripley "who goes to the lower Mississippi to assume the command of the 8th military department. In his hands the defence of the lower country is well placed..." Ripley had been transferred from the Northern to the Southern Division of the army. Parted along folds, soiled and lacking small portion of address leaf, not affecting text.
