Lot 80
Wirt, William
Autograph letter signed ("Wm. Wirt") as Attorney General, one page, 4to, Washington, 18 February 1823, to John C. Calhoun (?). Although the first name of the recipient is lost, it is likely that Wirt is addressing John C. Calhoun, then Secretary of War under Monroe. Wirt requests that Calhoun help expedite Dabney O. Carr's application to the military academy. Carr is "supported by the first names in Virg[ini]a," including Jefferson who unfortunately "could do nothing for [the Carrs] from the double delicacy that they were relations & Virginians." This last consideration Wirt believes also influenced fellow Virginian James Madison. Dabney O. Carr descended from Jefferson's great friend at William and Mary and brother-in-law Dabney Carr.Wirt appeals to Calhoun's ability to help Carr's case while maintaining propriety. Loss at lower right corner affecting recipient's name, some soiling. Framed with engraved portrait.
