Jeanniot began to exhibit at the Salon in Paris in the early 1870's. At first he concentrated on military themes, but he quickly moved on to figure studies and genre scenes. By the late 1890's he was enjoying his success as an artist, especially for his studies of women in the Belle Epoque style which is typified here by this elegant depiction of the fashionable lady seated, relaxing in a parlor.
