Cohen was born in Ballarat, Australia and is most noted for his work as a portraitist in both pastels and oils. He began his studies locally and then continued in Melbourne at the Gallery Schools, where he won the Travelling Scholarship in 1905. After having completed his studies in Paris, he settled in London where he became a member of the Royal Society of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He was awarded the silver medal at the Salon, Paris in 1924 and the gold in 1932. His works are part the the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia.
