PORTRAIT OF CAROL BROOKS MACNEIL

This is a portrait of the sculptor's wife, Carol Brooks MacNeil (1871 - 1944), a former student of MacNeils' and a sculptor in her own right. The two were married in 1895, and soon thereafter they left for a four-year stay in Rome, where MacNeil had won the distinguished Rinehart Scholarship for study at the American Academy. This portrait was probably executed during their years in Rome.
