Slave Bill of Sale 1859
Single sheet Bill of Sale stating "I have this day sold to William A. Harrison, negro woman Lucretia and her male son Charles, for the sum of one thousand dollars, and warrant them to be sound and slaves for life, and that they are no wise in cumbered and that I have a right to sell them. Witness my hand and seal this 12th Feb 1859" Henry H. Withers/Se. Fine and interesting historical document.
William A. Harrison, born 1795, was appointed attorney in the United States Court for the Western District of Virginia. During the Civil War in 1861 he was elected to the position of circuit Judge.
Henry Howard Withers, born Virginia 1824, was a merchant and farmer, prior to the civil War he was a Whig. Serving almost 4 years as a Major of the Tenth West Virgina Volunteers, during which time he was captured and served 6 months in prison.
