According to 1 Kings 11, in old age King Solomon was persuaded by his many foreign wives to worship the various gods of their countries, particularly Ashtoreth (shown here as Venus), patron goddess of Sidon. This subject enjoyed great popularity in the 17th century in Protestant Europe as a metaphor for the "idolatry" of Catholic religious imagery. In the 18th century, its appeal was owed more to its fascinating exoticism.

Wax relined. Areas of restoration around the edges. There is a 5-inch repaired tear in the curtains along the upper right margin; a similar repair in the curtains along the upper left margin; and another repaired tear in the lower left corner. Round area of repair 1 1/2 inches in diameter in the red background immediately to the right of the bow held by the bronze eros. Scattered touches of restoration elsewhere.
