Note: The "Charles Jarvis" identified on the label on the frame of this work is not the Irish portraitist also known as Charles Jervas, who died in 1739. Based on the style of the wig, this portrait appears to represent a young man of the 1750s. We are grateful to Caroline Pegum of the National Portrait Gallery, London, for this information.

Glue relined. Some losses of surface. A few holes. Very dense old varnish layer; difficult to interpret under UV light. Some contours, especially around the head, reinforced.
