George I Gilt-Gesso and Giltwood Pier Mirror
Circa 1720, in the manner of John Belchier
The beveled two-part mirror plate with star-cut upper section within a molded frame with flowerhead and foliate-carved reserves and surmounted by a cresting centered by a plume with three acanthus terminals flanked by eagles' head above scrolling foliage and pea shoot vines, the serpentine apron with a central shell and two brass candle arms. Height 71 inches (1.80 m), width 24 3/4 inches (62.8 cm).

Additional Notes & Condition Report

Good restored condition, mirror plates appear to be original, losses to silvering and oxidation to top plate, chips to edges to top edges of bottom plate and right corner; later gilding, candle arms and sockets later, slight bowing to top of cresting, commensurate with age, top acanthus leaf of cresting broken and repaired, possibly later, backboards later, the shell to the apron once fitted with a candle arm as there is a hole at the top which is seen at the back, losses and chips to gilding.
