George II Mahogany Library Armchair in the manner of William Hallett
Circa 1745
The padded rectangular backrest above an overupholstered seat on channeled downswept supports, raised on clasped acanthus-carved cabriole legs and ending in foliate-carved paw feet. Height of backrest 38 1/2 inches (97.8 cm), width 24 inches (61 cm), height of seat 17 inches (43.3 cm), width 23 1/2 inches (59.7 cm), width overall 29 inches (73.7 cm), depth 22 inches (55.8 cm).
Cf. an armchair from Foliejon Park, Winkfield, with almost identical legs, illustrated, M. Harris and Sons, Old Furniture and Works of Decorative Art, part II, n.d., p. 229. A suite of seating furniture almost certainly supplied to Simon,1st Earl Harcourt at Nuneham Park and attributed to William Hallett with identically carved legs and feet was sold, Sotheby's, London, July 3, 2003, lots 101, 102 and 103.
