NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle’s auction of photographs June 13, 2019 featured a wide selection of material from the 1850s to the present day. Highlighting the sale was one of the most enduringly popular of Berenice Abbott’s (1898-1991) images -- her stunning circa 1938 photograph of New York's famed Flatiron Building, which achieved $8,750, well above its $4,000-6,000 estimate. 

Robert Mapplethorpe's (1946-1989) floral still lifes are highly sought-after by collectors, and his photograph of gladioli in a vase from 1979 was no exception, fetching $8,125, surpassing its estimate of $4,000-6,000.

The auction featured a group of photographs from the late 1940s by George Platt Lynes (1907-1955) depicting dancers and others, all of which found favor from collectors, especially a group lot of seven prints of the Ballet Orpheus that sold for $8,750. The Ballet Orpheus was commissioned from Stravinsky by the Ballet Society. It was choreographed by George Balanchine, with props designed by Isamu Noguchi. Most of the images in the lot were of the lead dancers, Nicholas Magallanes and Francisco Moncion. It was this ballet that led to the invitation of the Society to become the permanent ballet company of the City Center of Music and Drama, under its new name, the New York City Ballet.
