Portrait of Philip III (1578-1621) in Armour
Oil on panel
18 1/8 x 14 inches (46 x 35.5 cm)
Unframed
Although portraits of kings in armour normally present them in full suit, this image shows Philip III without plate sleeves and shoulder pieces, revealing the chain mail worn beneath. As in most Spanish royal portraits, the king here wears the Order of the Golden Fleece, Catholic Europe's highest order of chivalry, founded in 1430 by the king's ancestor Philip of Burgundy.
