Rare Russian Bronze Group of a Bowman under Ivan the Terrible
Cast by Shtange after the model by Evgeny Lanceray, late 19th century
On an oval naturalistic base, cast as a bowman in the livery of the tsar on horseback, taking aim with his bow. Height 6 3/8 inches (16.2 cm).

The present model is a related work to Tsar's Falconer under Ivan the Terrible, although the exact date of production is not recorded. The falconer and the bowman both wear the livery of the tsar, but the clothing of the bowman is more an interpretation, as one might expect to find in a traditional Russian legend, or bylina, rather than the faithful reproduction typically seen in Lanceray's work. The model has been referred to elsewhere as both a hunter and a crossbowman, however the figure clearly appears to holding a bow.
