George Henry Story was a prominent American genre painter, portraitist, and museum curator of the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While he was working in Washington, he was commissioned to paint a portrait of President Lincoln, making pencil sketches in the Oval Office and posing the President for his first official photograph. (American Art Analog, 1986, vol.1, p.272) Public collections of his work include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, where he served as a curator from 1889-1906, the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, where he served as Curator of Painting from 1899 until his death in 1922, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.
