American Sterling Silver Water Pitcher of Southern and Jewish Interest
Circa 1870
Of ovoid-form with beaded band at waist, the body with an applied shield, the upswept loop handle with foliate join. Height 10 3/4 inches, approximately 28 ounces.
The monogram "JPB" is for Judah P. Benjamin (1811-1884), once U.S. Senator for Louisiana and then Secretary of War and Secretary of State for President Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States of America. Benjamin was also the first person of Jewish descent to be elected to the US Senate and to hold a U.S. Cabinet position.
