GALTON, FRANCIS The Narrative of an Explorer in Tropical South Africa.
London: John Murray, 1853. First edition. Publisher's speckled cloth decorated in gilt. 7 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches; xiv, [1], 314 pp.; colored folding map, tinted lithographed frontispiece, plates (some tinted), in-text illustrations. Recased preserving much of the original spine, spine toned, scattered foxing, bookplate to front pastedown, ownership signature to front free endpaper.
Uncommon in the original cloth. Galton's "writing is informative, accurate, lively and shrewd, and it admirably reflects the state of affairs in the country at that period" (Dictionary of South African Biography III, p. 316). He was a true Renaissance man and became an expert in many fields; among Galton's many achievements is the invention of fingerprinting.
