Irish George III Giltwood Mirror

The shaped mirror plate within a pierced frame flanked by cluster-column stiles on rusticated bases, leafy branches and scrolls, surmounted by a pagoda-form cresting on C-scrolls with icicles and rusticated bases, flanked by flowerheads and leaves, the apron centered by a female mask; the backboard with printed label and inked number: No. 4512/JOHN BOOKER/AT No. 6/Essex Bridge/Dublin . Height 66 inches (165.1 cm), width 41 inches (104.2 cm).

The firm of Francis and John Booker, sons of John Booker (d. 1750), 'Looking-glass manufacturer,' Essex Bridge, Dublin, took over their father's business after his death and was one of two principal glass sellers in Dublin in the third quarter of the 18th century. It appears that the firm did not make the frames for their mirror plates until after Francis's death in 1772, when John advertised himself as 'Looking Glass-seller, Carver and Gilder, No 6 Essex-bridge.' The present mirror bears a printed label that is virtually identical to one illustrated by The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture,
p. 144, fig. 195, also with an inked (higher) number.
