Although the identity of the sitter is not entirely certain, a portrait of Countess Mostrowska from 1838 is listed in the artist's notebooks. We are grateful to Dr. Eugene Barilo von Reisberg, author of the catalogue raisonne on Winterhalter's work, for his assistance in cataloguing this lot and for his professional opinion confirming its authenticity.
