Louis XV Silver Plate from the Orloff Service
Edme-Pierre Balzac, Paris, circa 1770
Circular with a molded rim, centering an engraved Russian double-headed eagle, the reverse engraved and stamped with inventory number 40, further struck with St. Petersburg assay marks for 1784, assaymaster Nikifor Moschalkin. Diameter 12 3/4 inches (32.4 cm.), approximately 37.25 ounces (1,159 grams).

Provenance:
Empress Catherine II of Russia (1729-1796).
Count Gregory Orloff (1734-1783), after 1772.
Re-acquired by Catherine the Great in 1784, then by descent in the Imperial Collection to Emperor Nicholas II (1868-1918), until 1917.
The Soviet Government, until the mid-1920s.
With S.J. Phillips, London; purchased by the family of the present owner December 2001.

Additional Notes & Condition Report

In generally good condition. Surface wear, knife marks and minor bruises to edges, consistent with age and use. Several black surface spots to from of plate (visible in catalogue photos), apparently due to corrosion from salt.
