Lot 275
George III Sterling Silver Centerpiece Epergne
Andrew Fogelberg, London, 1770
The circular center bowl with ram's masks hung with swags on triangular base with Bacchus masks hung with swags surrounded by six branches holding smaller bowls, all raised on tripod stand with sphinx feet. Height 17 3/4 inches (45 cm), diameter 22 inches (55.8 cm), total approximately 216 ounces.
A similar epergne by Fogelberg, but dated 1771 and with later candle branches was sold Christie's London, November 25, 2008, lot 203.
Andrew Fogelberg (c. 1732-1815) was a noted silversmith and master of classical decoration as evidenced in this centerpiece. The unusual sphinx feet look forward to the passion for all things Egyptian that would characterize Regency silver. Fogelberg's most illustrious student was Paul Storr whose early works incorporated many of his master's motifs.
