Pair of Baltic Neoclassical Silk- and Needlework-Upholstered Giltwood Open Armchairs (Fauteuils en Cabriolet)
Last quarter of the 18th century
Each woven oval backrest with applied needlework within a molded frame surmounted by a ribbon-tied cresting above an overupholstered bowfronted seat flanked by padded arm rests with guilloche-carved scrolled handholds and supports, the similarly carved apron raised on tapering husk-carved stop-fluted legs; the underside of one armchair with scrim fabric painted with identification nos. MGM / XX3690 / 7- A. Height 39 3/4 inches (1.01 m), width 27 inches (68.9 cm), depth 20 inches (50.8 cm).
Provenance:
MGM Studios Hollywood, California, used in the 1938 film Marie Antoinette and the 1958 film Gigi.
Originally part of a suite of a settee and six armchairs, the present pair was used by MGM Studios, Hollywood, in the 1938 film Marie Antoinette directed by W.S. Van Dyke, starring Norma Shearer, Tyrone Power and John Barrymore. The suite was used again for the 1958 film Gigi, directed by Vincente Minelli, starring Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier, Louis Jourdan, Herminone Gingold and Eva Gabor.
