George IV Ebonized and Parcel-Gilt Armchair in the manner of Morel and Hughes
First quarter 19th century
The reeded tablet-form toprail carved with a band of anthemion above a padded backrest and loose-cushioned caned seat flanked by downswept armrests and raised on foliate-carved turned legs, on casters. Height 37 1/2 inches (95.2 cm), width 25 1/2 inches (67.7 cm), depth 21 inches, (51.3 cm).
Nicholas Morel (fl. 1790-1830) worked with George IV when Prince Regent at Carlton House and later at Windsor Castle with his partners, firstly Robert Hughes, and then the firm of Seddon. Another of his commissions was Northumberland House in 1823.
