Between 1817 and 1821, students in Fitzwilliam and Rindge, New Hampshire used paper-faced ladies in pastoral landscape surrounded by floral borders. There is not evidence of the schoolmistress responsible for these patterns, but she was probably familiar with slightly earlier samplers worked in Leominster and Lancaster, MA. The History of Fitzwilliam names a Betsy Bowker and a Betsy Wright who taught there at an unknown date, and this may refer to Laura Bowker's sister Betsy. This closely resembles a sampler by Laura Bowker 1817 in Ring, Girlhood Embroidery, p 245. Illustrated in the exhibition and book With Needle and Brush: Schoolgirl Embroidery From the Connecticut River Valley, 1740-1840, p. 44 pl. 22.
